Support Bannie's Road to Recovery

Dear friends, family, and kind-hearted strangers,

I am reaching out on behalf of my first friend and 90 year old grandma, Bannie, who has recently endured a challenging medical ordeal. Bannie suffered a fall that exacerbated an existing infection leading to sepsis. After spending over a week in the hospital fighting for her life, she is now in subacute rehab recovering well. However, she is no longer able to live independently and will be moving into my house in Detroit to be supported by a live-in caregiver.

Why We Need Your Help

Caretaker Support

Earlier this year, I transitioned out of my increasingly toxic job and have been transitioning back into consulting work so the unexpected costs associated with my grandmother's care have taken a toll. My sister and I are going back and forth, between our respective cities, to support with care but we've been able to connect with some elder advocates and caretakers who come by when we're unable to or when our mom is working. The caretakers ensure that Bannie receives the attention and advocacy she needs when we can't be there. They visit a few times a week so that we can work and also handle the backend logistics of her transition into my house.

Medical Supplies

We are in need of medical supplies and equipment until we can secure coverage through the MI Health Waiver program. This includes essential items that aid in Bannie's daily care and comfort along with equipment to ensure my home can be an accessible space for Bannie. One critical piece of equipment is the construction of a ramp to make my home more accessible, ensuring she can move in and out of my house safely and comfortably.

Live-In Caretaker Costs

Bannie's transition back home from rehab is expected to happen before the end of July. To facilitate this, we need to cover the costs of a live-in caretaker for the first month, including their salary and relocation expenses. Having a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) live with Bannie will provide her with continuous, professional care, enabling her to regain her independence outside of a nursing home. We are in the process of applying for support available in Michigan to cover these caretaking costs on a long-term basis but those benefits won't kick in until the end of August/early September since we cannot officially enroll her into the program until she is out of rehab and in the home. This leaves us with a gap of coverage and the costs are hefty.
