I never dreamed we’d be in this position. Our sweet boy Bandit who is not yet 6 was diagnosed with IVDD. I knew Corgis could be prone to it but I never dreamed he would have it. He came from a good breeder, great bloodlines but sadly sometimes it just happens. We have ramps for both the bed and and the couch. I noticed he seemed to be kind of weak in his hindquarters and he wasn’t himself. I called the Vet and made an appointment and by his appointment he seemed very nauseous, lip licking and restless. The Vet checked him out and his exam was uneventful and he didn’t seem to be in pain so after his exam and bloodwork she prescribed some medication for his tummy and we agreed to talk on Monday and perhaps repeat x-rays . By Sunday morning I knew it was more than that. He was in pain. I called his breeder and we talked about his x-ray from 3 years prior that showed some crystallization and mineralization in some areas and that I thought he was in pain and we agreed on some pain medication I had on hand and I’d get him back to the Vet asap. We repeated the x-rays and she said they didn’t look much different but they would send it out to the radiologist and see what he says. We had already pretty much made up our minds that at the very least we were going to take him to Washington State University Veterinary Hospital for an MRI. ASAP. Bandit’s breeder is a teacher of Oncology there and it is one of the finest Veterinary hospitals in the United States just about 2 hours from us. I told her we wanted to get him in, she said let me call you right back. About 10 minutes later she called me and said can you have him here tomorrow at 11:00? I said absolutely! That was exactly one week ago. When we arrived he was unable to walk, had no deep feeling at the base of his tail. Upon examination and his original MRI they found he had 2 ruptured disks, they showed us his MRI and talked with us showing the shards of disks that were pushing up into his spinal cord and that if we agreed he needed to have immediate surgery so that it wasn’t ruptured. They gave us 60-70% odds that he would regain the ability to walk and that if the odds were less we would be having a different conversation. The costs were approximately $6,800 - $9,800. Today when we checked out the tally was $12,083.00. But to see this sweet baby sleeping at my feet we know we made the right decision. This amount doesn’t include the $800 from the week before local Vet diagnostics. Also it doesn’t include the weeks if not months of rehabilitation he will need going forward. We have a local rehabilitation facility and each acupuncture and underwater treadmill session will be $240. We feel so thankful and blessed that we were able to get in so quickly and I trusted my instincts to follow up, had we waited even a couple of days Bandit’s outcome could have been very different and we might have had to say goodbye to the sweetest most lovable pup I have ever known. I hate to ask for help but a couple of amazing friends that I have met that I have met and known through my Corgis reminded me what an amazing community we all are and that I should ask for help to get all the help baby boy needs to get him back to his bouncy little self for the rest of his life! We thank you for all your kind words, love, support and any financial support you can spare for #banditsivddjourney
