If you know the Davidson family—Chris, Bekki, and Parker—you know how active they are in Flyball and UpDog. But you may have noticed their recent absence from the lanes and field.

Their beloved dog Backup hadn’t been feeling well for some time. What was expected to be a routine procedure to remove a mass near his anal gland turned out to be much more serious. An ultrasound just before surgery revealed the mass had spread to the lymph nodes near his bladder.

Backup underwent a difficult five-hour surgery to remove both the mass and the affected lymph nodes. As he was recovering at home, the family received the devastating news that the masses were malignant.

Like any five-year-old, Parker struggled to understand why her "Champion Dog" wasn’t feeling well—and why he would need more treatment.

Fortunately, when the family met with the oncologist, they were told that Backup is currently cancer-free. We are all incredibly thankful for this blessing. The oncologist explained that Backup has a slow-progressing form of cancer and that chemotherapy can help keep him cancer-free for the next 1–2 years—or even longer.

To give Backup the best chance at a long and healthy life, he will be undergoing chemotherapy over the next few months.
