Help Baby Mikey’s Battle Against Toxic Shock Syndrome

To our dear friends, family, and kind-hearted supporters —

My dear brother Roberto and his wife Allie’s world was turned upside down in the most unimaginable way when their sweet 15-month-old son, Mikey, fell gravely ill. He is now on life support, battling multiple organ failures caused by toxic shock syndrome.

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare but devastating illness caused by toxins released from certain bacterial infections. It progresses quickly and often without warning, attacking the body in unimaginable ways. TSS doesn’t just harm one part of the body—it ravages everything. It causes inflammation, fever, dangerously low blood pressure, and life-threatening complications. Mikey’s little heart, lungs, kidneys, and liver have all been impacted.

Since Sunday, December 8th, Mikey has been at UVA Children’s Hospital, fighting for his life with the help of an ECMO circuit to support his heart and lungs, a ventilator to help him breathe, and dialysis for his kidneys. Despite all of this, Mikey is showing incredible strength and resilience as he fights for his life.

As parents, Allie and Roberto are doing everything they can to stay by his side while also caring for their 6-year-old son, Robert Jr. Every ounce of their energy is devoted to Mikey, but the world outside the hospital room hasn’t stopped. Every contribution, no matter how large or small, is deeply appreciated and will assist cover Mikey's medical care and treatment, hotel stays, and ease the burden of any unforeseen bills.
