On December 15th, 2025, our son Lonzel Dewight Adams III—whom we lovingly call Lonnie—was born at just 30 weeks and 3 days due to severe fetal growth restriction caused by placental insufficiency. I was hospitalized for 18 days after Thanksgiving for close monitoring. On the day Lonnie was born, a routine ultrasound revealed that the blood flow from my placenta was moving away from him, and he was no longer getting what he needed to grow (reverse end diastolic flow). The doctors scheduled an emergency C-section that evening, and Lonnie arrived at 10:54 PM, weighing only 2lbs 4oz, and 10 weeks premature.

We live in Calvert County, Maryland, which is quite far from any hospital with a NICU. I gave birth at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, about 75 miles from our home in Prince Frederick. The distance from home, friends, and family has made traveling to the hospital a challenge, and the costs of travel, parking, and lodging add up quickly. While we have insurance, not all of our bills will be covered for both my extended stay and Lonnie’s time in the NICU. I am expected to return to work in February, and it’s very likely that Lonnie will still be in the hospital when that happens. Despite the distance, I am committed to visiting him every day and providing breast milk to support his growth and nutrition needs.
