At Liam’s 20-week anatomy scan, we learned that his tiny heart was not developing as it should. Further testing confirmed a diagnosis of Tetralogy of Fallot with Pulmonary Atresia and MAPCAs — a complex and extremely rare congenital heart defect. This condition affects only 1 in 10,000 babies. All this to say, our little Liam is extra special!
We knew Liam would need open-heart surgery to help correct these issues, but the timing has always been uncertain.
After birth, Liam showed what a fighter he is by quickly maintaining his own oxygen levels and being stable enough to go home. However, with this heart condition, certain things are out of our control, including his ability to grow. His tiny heart has to work four times as hard as a healthy heart, and this makes it very difficult for him to gain weight.
Many children with MAPCAs are able to wait until around six months of age for surgical intervention, and we were hopeful Liam would follow that path. However, after undergoing a recent cardiac catheterization, Liam did not recover as expected. Since then, he has remained inpatient at Phoenix Children’s Hospital under close monitoring.
Given the complexity of his condition, we felt it was best to reach out to Stanford for a second opinion. Stanford Children’s Hospital — a leading center in the nation for treating this specific heart defect — reviewed Liam’s medical chart and determined that he needs heart surgery immediately. While we are not excited about open-heart surgery, we are hopeful and grateful that Liam will receive the help he needs to grow and thrive. We are very confident in the medical team that will be caring for him.
In the coming days, Liam will be transported via medical flight to Stanford Children’s Hospital in California. They allow one parent to travel with him; the other parent will need to arrange travel separately. As we prepare for this unexpected change and look ahead to the long road before us, we are asking for prayers and financial support.
Every donation will go toward medical expenses, family travel, lodging, and time away from work as we focus on being by Liam’s side during this critical time.
Thank you for showing love to our sweet boy in any way you can ❤️
Additionally, please say a prayer for Liam’s big brother and sisters as they patiently wait for their baby brother to come home again.
