Hello,
My name is Brian, and I’m reaching out with a heavy heart to ask for help for Baby J.
I first got Baby J back in August of 2017 through a rather sketchy Craigslist meetup. I had just graduated high school, and all my friends were leaving for college, but I decided to stay. For the first time EVER, my grandma and aunt agreed they “wouldn’t mind if I got a dog,” assuming I wouldn’t actually follow through. Little did they know, they were giving me not just my first pet, but something so much more.
Baby J has always been a big pitty baby. He loves wrestling, cuddling, being picked up, and carne asada tacos. He recently turned 7, and up until now, he’s never had any health issues.
But on August 24th, I noticed his health beginning to decline. He was chewing his paws until they were red and bleeding, and he had eye discharge. After trying some home remedies, I decided to take him to the ER on August 25th. They informed me he had an ear and eye infection, and that the paw chewing was due to allergies. They gave me medications (Cefpodoxime & Mometamax) and advised me to find a primary vet, then sent me on my way.
On September 25th, I was finally able to get him an appointment with a primary vet. The good news was that his ear and eye infections were gone, but his paws weren’t any better. Once again, they said it was allergies and gave me more medications (Apoquel & MiconaHex+).
Then, today at 1:00 a.m., I tried taking Baby J for our nightly walk, and his back legs kept sliding out from under him. He tried twice to stand but gave up. I immediately carried him to the car and rushed him to the emergency room again.
This time, they came back with different answers. They believe Baby J has hypotension and severe hyperkalemia, which leads them to suspect Addison’s disease (a rare endocrine disorder in dogs that occurs when the adrenal glands don’t produce enough hormones).
They told me he needed to be admitted and quoted me between $6,000 - $8,000. I applied for CareCredit but was denied. When I asked if I could take him home and return once I had the funds, they informed me that Baby J might not make it through the night. The vet did all she could for him, giving him steroid shots, and advised me to bring him back for more shots until his primary vet is available again (if he doesn’t pass away before then) which unfortunately won’t be until November 15th.
Baby J is more than just my first pet; he’s my best friend, my son, my savior. He’s been there for me through some of the darkest times in my life, always making things better with his silly antics and his ability to bring joy.
I’m desperate—I’m not afraid to admit it. I’m not ready to lose him, and even looking through our old photos to write this has me in tears.
Anything you can give would mean the world to us, and we would be forever grateful.
