On August 12th, after months of joyfully preparing for their baby’s arrival, Kaitie and Jaron welcomed their first child, Jonah Henry Kiger, into the world. Jonah is beautiful—he looks just like his dad did as a baby, but he has his mom’s cute nose.
Jonah's birth took a sudden and traumatic turn. After two exhausting days of labor and an emergency C-section, Kaitie came out of anesthesia to learn that Jonah was born without a heartbeat. Doctors performed chest compressions, got his heart beating again, and intubated him within minutes. But during those first 10–14 minutes of his life, Jonah’s brain was deprived of oxygen, causing severe HIE (Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy). Now, Jonah is fighting for his life in the NICU, with a ventilator, feeding tube, and around-the-clock care.
Jonah is surrounded by love and prayer. Kaitie is grounded in her unshakable faith as she fights for her baby and pumps around the clock to feed him. Jaron has been the steady rock of their family, playing guitar by Jonah’s bedside and supporting both his wife and son every step of the way. The NICU staff have remarked at how touched they are by how much love and support surrounds Jonah—he has not spent one moment at the hospital without a parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle by his side.
Amidst all of this, Kaitie has faced a series of serious medical complications of her own, including that she was diagnosed with postpartum preeclampsia, requiring 4.5 days of inpatient treatment. And, just in the last 24 hours, she was rushed to the ER with a painful infection at her C-section incision site. She is now undergoing daily wound care and medical treatment.
We’re asking you to support Kaitie and Jaron. They are facing a growing and overwhelming financial challenge as they respond to this unthinkable experience. They need our help so that they can focus on caring for their baby and for each other.
