On August 7th, Makayla delivered a beautiful baby boy, Cole Michael Wier, 8 lbs 10 oz. The delivery went well, and he was just perfect. However, 24 hrs later, he was transferred to Crouse NICU. After being evaluated by an amazing team of doctors, surgeons, and nursing staff, it was determined that Cole had a birth defect that required him to undergo surgery for a colostomy. Although we have been told this is a common finding, the road ahead will be challenging. He will need multiple surgeries before we can put this all behind us, and he can live a normal life. This birth defect can be associated with various others, but fortunately, only a couple of others have been diagnosed as of now. We are so thankful for this.

I cannot speak highly enough about the care received at Crouse NICU. Their expertise and kindness have given us hope and comfort during this difficult journey. We are so thankful for their tireless work and for the difference they make every single day. Not only do they care for Cole, but they have also thought of everything and taken such good care of Makayla and Payn.

This first year will be a rough road for Cole. Makayla and her husband, Payn have tremendous strength during this difficult time. This whole thing just breaks my heart to see them having to go through this. They are so good with him, and I couldn't be prouder of both of them in the way they are handling what was handed to them. However, they will be faced with some challenges ahead. Although they do have insurance that will cover much of the medical care, we expect out-of-pocket costs—including deductibles, co-insurance, travel, time off work, and follow-up care. We have estimated these costs to be at least $20,000.
