On Friday afternoon, my cousin Avva moved to New York City to start a new job. Less than an hour after she moved into her new apartment, she went outside to walk her dog and returned to find her apartment in flames.

Thankfully, my cousin, her friend, and her dog are all safe and no one else in the building was harmed. No one has determined the cause of the fire yet, but she lost everything in minutes and her apartment is now uninhabitable. The Red Cross has graciously put her up in an apartment until Thursday. But it is unclear if she will get her rent and deposit back and now she has nothing left.
