This summer, I have the amazing opportunity to travel to Nepal for a 4-week medical internship, and I need your help to get there! I’ll be working in both Kathmandu and the more rural region of Chitwan, shadowing local doctors in hospitals and clinics, learning hands-on skills like drawing blood and taking blood pressure, and participating in community outreach to help bring medical services to those in need.
As you may know, I want to pursue the field of medicine and possibly become a surgeon. I have been focusing my studies in the sciences and taking electives like medical terminology to prepare myself for pre-med in college. I knew I wanted to participate in an international, medically-focused internship to broaden my experience and to build some tangible skills. What I learned through researching opportunities is that there aren’t very many medically-focused internships for high school students.
Fortunately, I found Projects Abroad! Over the course of the 4-weeks I will spend in Nepal, I will complete 50 hours of clinical shadowing and 30 hours of community health services. I will also attend lectures at a teaching hospital and work with students from all over the world - as of now, my cohort includes students from England, France, Australia, Spain, Japan, and the US.
Outside of the medical work, I will have amazing opportunities over the weekends including visiting ancient temples, watching traditional dances, eating local foods, and going on jungle safaris in Chitwan National park (with a chance of seeing bengal tigers and rhinos)! We will also be visiting the local towns of Pokhara and Nagarkot, home to the World Peace Pagoda and a stunning view of Mount Everest. I am so excited to experience the beautiful culture and landscapes of a country I have always wanted to visit!
I created the video above to share some imagery of where I will be and what I will be doing.
To help fund this journey, I have been working as a lifeguard, handweaving and selling blankets (let me know if you’d like to order one!), and creating and selling homemade candles and engraved decorative stones. As a 16-year-old who is passionate about both medicine and travel, this trip is a perfect way for me to take a big step toward my future. Any donation, big or small, would mean the world to me and help make this dream a reality.
Thank you so much for your support!
