Support Aubree's Fight Against GBS

Hi everyone, my name is Aubree Hanks. I am 20 years old, and a junior at Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts. Although, I’m originally from Cairo, Georgia. I am hoping to get my Bachelor’s in Psychology and go further to get my Master’s in Clinical. I’m also pursuing my CCMA license, and I currently work in the emergency room at Heywood Hospital in Gardner.

Nearly six weeks ago, I started having tingling sensations and shooting pains in my feet and calves. I ignored it, but after a week of no relief, I drove myself to an emergent facility. I explained my numbness to the staff, and I was then rushed in an ambulance to a nearby hospital. I was quickly admitted for further testing.

I had a CT, countless blood panels, four hours' worth of MRIs, and eventually a spinal tap. I was in the hospital for a week waiting on test results. The diagnosis was Guillain-Barré Syndrome or GBS. GBS is a rare autoimmune condition in which your immune system attacks your peripheral nerves. It leads to symptoms like numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness that can progress to paralysis.

Within that week, I was paralyzed from my thighs down. I was then transferred to a skilled nursing facility where I have been doing physical therapy every day for four weeks now. My entire life has been put on hold, but I am extremely motivated to walk again and have tried to keep a positive mindset throughout the process.

Additionally, while I was in the hospital and rehab, my parents took turns flying up from Georgia to be by my side. They are my true number one supporters, but red-eye flights and hotels on top of the medical expenses, in all honesty, has been a lot.

I do not want to pity anyone into donating to these expenses whatsoever, but my parents, as well as church raised me to believe that in times of need, your community is who holds you up. If you are in the position to donate, it will be greatly appreciated, and if not, your prayers and support will do just as well.

I will continue to update this as symptoms change or mobility increases. Thank you again,
Aubree L. Hanks
