Help Atom Fight Osteosarcoma – We Won’t Give Up!
My 13-year-old son Atom is facing an incredibly tough battle. He has relapsed from Osteosarcoma (bone cancer), and this time, the tumors have spread to areas that can’t be operated on—his spine, hip, and pelvis.
Since the end of 2023, it has been a whirlwind. For 10 months, Atom endured aggressive chemotherapy that completely wiped him out. In the middle of it all, he underwent limb-salvaging surgery, which saved his leg from amputation—but we didn’t realize how painful a prosthetic femur and knee would be for him. He has an expandable prosthetic that can only expand 4 more times (that's 4 more surgeries in the future) If he continues to grow he will need a new prosthetic femur.
Despite the pain, he was determined to walk again. He worked tirelessly in physical therapy, refusing to use a walker because he wanted to return to 8th grade on his own two feet.
We celebrated in August 2024 when he rang the bell, marking the end of his treatment. But our relief was short-lived. By November, his three-month check-up and scans revealed the unthinkable—he had relapsed. I couldn’t believe it. After everything he had fought through, we were right back in the battle.
Through it all, Atom remains quiet and calm. He doesn’t ask many questions, but I know he understands what’s happening. And I know he knows—I am here, fighting for him every step of the way.
We Need Your Help
Osteosarcoma is a rare and aggressive cancer that primarily affects children and teenagers, requiring intense chemotherapy, radiation, and surgeries to fight it. Unfortunately, doctors believe that even aggressive chemotherapy may no longer be an effective treatment for Atom. They want to continue with stronger doses and focus on pain management telling me that chemotherapy isn't working. They want to focus on palliative care and keeping him comfortable only—but I refuse to give up.
I am determined to explore alternative treatments, second opinions, and specialists across the country who have more experience with Osteosarcoma. These treatments and travel expenses are overwhelming, and I can't do this alone.
In addition to the medical challenges we face, my inability to work full-time due to Atom's ongoing care needs has become increasingly tough. With frequent hospital stays, intensive treatments, and Atom's need for assistance to walk all over again, the financial strain has reached a breaking point. It’s a struggle that feels insurmountable, and I urgently need support to navigate this difficult situation.
