Hello everyone , just as others before me I am in a hard situation. This is my Athena. She is 11 yrs old and the light of my life. I had her as a small puppy and she has gotten me thru many hardships. No matter what was thrown my way, Athena has been there. She is the reason I get up on time for work and the relief when I get home for her kisses. I am a working professional and even I am living paycheck to paycheck as most of us are. I have tapped out on my emergency funds on hand and my Athena is still in critical condition for pancreatitis with complications such as IMHA (Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia) where her immune system is destroying her rbc. She needed two blood transfusions to save her life. Unfortunately, she ended up in fluid overload and she is in an oxygen tank for supportive measures. They haven’t ruled out if she has a blood clot in her lungs but she is being giving blood thinners. Athena has not eaten since Monday night 9/29/2025. They have placed an NG tube in place and she has not been able to tolerate tube feeds. They are switching her meds for the pancreatitis as they believe this is our most pressing issue. She is only in the oxygen tank as supportive measures due to the pulmonary hypertension( she is being medicated for that it’s only been 12 hours since start of treatment) with significant improvement. Her last two blood count results are showing that she isn’t destroying her rbc so she has not needed any more blood transfusions. Which is very good. My little baby is such a fighter and only if my financials was as deep as my love for her I wouldn’t be making this plea for help in saving my baby. Athena is making progress despite the set backs. It’s all a matter of giving her that support/time in the hospital . But as we all know time is money. I am humbly asking for any help I can get to help off set some of the vet bills. I have had to put her brother Mao to sleep back in July 2025, just a few days before my birthday. Know that I would not place Athena in any inhumane condition if she does not stand a chance. I will always chose her wellbeing over my heartache. Thank you so much for staying to read and hear about my little Athena. Named after my favorite Greek warrior Goddess . Because Athena is a warrior.
Timeline: 9/29/2025 - 1am—- er visit for Nausea and vomiting. treated for it and sent home to follow up with primary vet
9/30/2025: taken to primary vet: admitted for pancreatitis . Started on fluids and iv anbx. Overnight/2 nights
10/1/2025: she is weaker and rbc has dropped. Overnight transfer to Suncoast er for the nearest clinic that had blood.
10/2/2025 she has perked up and walking. Hasn’t had an appetite despite favorite food and meds. transfer back to primary vet for monitoring. Later that afternoon she became weak again. Her rbc dropped. Transferred back to er for blood.
10/3/2025: Athena got second transfusion overnight, she became fluid overloaded. They stopped infusion and placed in an oxygen tank. Transferred to Blue Pearl 24 hr er for ongoing care as she was not going to last without oxygen support.
10/4/2025: latest update: she has been confirmed to have underlying heart disease which explains the fluid overload. They have given her cardiac meds and diuretics with great improvement. She was off oxygen for a little bit but they are concerned about her pulmonary hypertension so they placed her back in for supportive measures. The last two blood count showed her count is stabilizing/maintaining. No blood transfusions. They have placed an NG tube to decompress the air in her stomach as well as some bile. Attempts to feed her are not going well . They are adjusting her meds for pancreatitis. Results to confirm IMHA diagnosis will be in this afternoon but we are praying that she is out of the woods in that regard so we can focus on her pancreatitis and get her feeling better.
