I have raised my sweet boy cat, Ash, as my baby since he was 3 weeks old in September of 2022. He was a bottle baby and I committed every 3 hours to feeding him and nourishing his life. He is my absolute best friend and my whole world. On January 16th, we realized our baby was having difficulty urinating in the litter box and was vocalizing in pain. We brought him into the emergency vet on the morning of the 17th and were charged $380 to have him seen. They performed an ultrasound and found that he had crystals in his bladder and urethra. Urethral blockages are one of the number one killers of boy cats in the world, but they were not concerned about the size of his bladder and sent us home with meds and special food for him. 24 hours later, his symptoms had worsened significantly and we found ourself back in the emergency vet, but this time with a bladder enlarged 4 times the size it was previously, turning it into a life or death situation. We were charged $3,397.30 to attempt to clear his blockage. They sedated him and attempted to clear him at around 11pm and were unable to. They had a separate doctor attempt again around 2am and again were unsuccessful. They attempted one last time at 9am on the morning of the 19th, and again were unsuccessful. They have referred us to UC Davis to perform a life saving surgery on our baby boy and have been quoted an estimate of around an additional $6,000. We are two recent college grads, already trying to make ends meet in our day to day lives and cannot afford this terrifying procedure ourselves.
