Help Support Asa’s Stroke and Heart Surgery Recovery

On August 4th, our 21-year-old son Asa experienced a sudden stroke while working out, affecting the right side of his body. We contacted 911 right away. The Belgrade Fire and Ambulance team arrived within minutes and Asa was transported to the hospital in Bozeman, Montana.

At the hospital, the stroke team was activated. Asa was immediately taken for an MRI and CT scan, where doctors found two blood clots that had caused the stroke.

Fortunately, it was not classified as a major stroke, but is still an unexpected and difficult moment for our family.

Asa was admitted for continued testing and care, including blood work, additional MRIs, cognitive evaluations, and visits from physical and occupational therapists. Doctors suspected that a small hole in his heart — a Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) — could have contributed. After multiple attempts, the medical team located it during an internal echocardiogram.

On October 10th, Asa underwent a successful procedure to close the PFO. Recovery has been slow but steady, and we’re grateful he has had no major setbacks. He continues to make progress with physical therapy, no longer needs occupational therapy, and meets regularly with his cardiologist. He’ll remain on a blood thinner for a short period before transitioning to a daily baby aspirin for life.

Even with insurance, the costs of hospital care, imaging, therapy, surgery, medications, and follow-up appointments have added up quickly.

We’re hoping to raise $2,500 to help ease the financial strain and allow Asa to stay focused on healing.

Before all of this, Asa enjoyed drawing, hiking, concerts, movies, and — like many young people — gaming with friends. Regaining strength and coordination has been challenging, but he’s working hard every day to get back to the activities he loves.

Your support — in any amount — would mean so much to us. It helps lighten the load and reminds Asa that he has a community behind him. Each day brings him closer to feeling like himself again.

If you’re unable to donate, sharing his story is just as appreciated.

Thank you for your kindness, prayers, and encouragement as Asa continues his recovery.

With gratitude,
The Wolters/Tibbitts Family
