Arturo’s Journey: A Mother’s Strength, A Child’s Courage

On July 15, a day that began like any other quickly became the most difficult day of my life. My son Arturo, an eight-year-old boy with a bright and loving spirit, began experiencing weakness in his left arm and leg. He struggled to walk and even to hold a cup. As a mother, I knew something was wrong. I took him to the emergency room, hoping it was a minor injury from school.

After requesting blood work and scans, doctors informed me that Arturo had a mass in his brain — a rare condition known as a mixed germ cell tumor. Hearing those words shattered my heart. No parent is ever prepared to receive such news, and the fear, uncertainty, and pain in that moment were indescribable.

As a single mother of three, balancing work, responsibilities, and the emotional weight of this diagnosis felt overwhelming. But my children are my purpose, and I made the necessary sacrifices to be at every appointment, every treatment, and every difficult moment by Arturo’s side. I hold deep respect for every parent who has walked a similar path. This journey is incredibly painful, and it tests every part of you.

Arturo, despite everything, has shown remarkable strength. He is a joyful child who loves to sing, listens to music every day, and carries a beautiful, kind heart. His courage and smile continue to inspire and motivate me, even on the hardest days.

Arturo underwent six cycles of chemotherapy, a five-month process that demanded extraordinary resilience. The final cycle was especially challenging, leaving him physically exhausted — yet he never stopped fighting. And through God’s grace, Arturo was able to ring the bell, celebrating that the tumor has shrunk significantly.

However, our journey is not over. Arturo must now undergo radiation treatment in San Diego, which will require continued strength, time, and adjustment for our family. My focus now is on helping him heal, supporting his recovery, and being present for all three of my children. This experience has been a sacrifice for all of us, especially for his siblings, but our love for one another carries us forward.
