support artist, ayo ohs, after fire destroys studio

A Minor Relief, a forthcoming EP and night of performance, is set to premier on Oct 17th/18th in NYC and needs support to replace what was lost in the fire. Help ensure this debut album and evening-length work can still shine.

A Devastating Fire
On the night of September 17th, a 5 alarm fire consumed an artist warehouse in Red Hook, Brooklyn. ayo’s studio was completely destroyed including a hand-built recording studio, essential gear, and archives. Instruments, keyboards, microphones, interfaces, hard drives, cameras, artistic notebooks, research materials, and accompanying tools were all lost. This is a tremendous personal and professional loss, coming just weeks before the album release and premiere performances.

Support Needed
While ayo received an FCA Emergency Grant and also intended to release a crowdfunding campaign for production costs and paying collaborators for the show, there is now a huge deficit in equipment, rehearsal space, and resources.
Once funded, the album will be released and the performance will premiere October 17–18th at Culture Lab, Long Island City. With your help, A Minor Relief can debut at its full strength and ensure that ayo’s practice continues to thrive beyond this moment of loss.

What is A Minor Relief?
A Minor Relief is a multi-disciplinary, site-specific performance by ayo ohs, staging a forthcoming album of the same title. Presented with guest artists, including musician Treya Lam, the piece weaves together songs and stories in a night of original music, dance, and theater. The audience will travel between gallery and theater spaces of Culture Lab, immersed in performance, sound, and storytelling.

A Continuation of The Silent Unseen
This project grows directly out of ayo’s multi-year work, The Silent Unseen, which traces Asian American identity through embodied history, narration, and somatic practice, including an audio tour set at the Queens Museum.

A Minor Relief is both a continuation and a counterpoint to The Silent Unseen; where ayo grapples with themes of visibility, grief, and release but this time uses voice, humor, and live musical collaboration to chart this deeply personal journey through performance.

Why your support matters now more than ever
Funding this campaign will not only cover the production costs of the album and evening-length performance—it will also help ayo replace some of the most critical equipment lost in the fire, that is directly needed to share the work. Your contribution is an investment in both the survival of this project and the artist’s long-term creative practice.

How the funds will be used
  • Replacement or rental of lost instruments, recording gear, and technical equipment
  • Professional mixing and mastering of the album
  • Artist and production team fees
  • Rehearsal, production, and performance costs
  • Publicity and community outreach
