Arsenik is a subcultural shop in the heart of Malmö, where you can find anything from punk-, metal-, goth-, heavy metal-, and synth-related items, to vintage artefacts and design objects. The shop was started in February 2019 by Cecilia Hammarlund.
Without a doubt, Malmö has long lacked a shop and a meeting place for both young and old with a with subcultural preferences, Arsenik has worked to fill that void, and has thus become an important node. This is especially so for youth who are in need of a place to hang out, given the lack of youth houses. A place where they are welcomed and feel appreciated without being judged. Many of these youth have found a safe haven in different musical genres such as punk, heavy metal, goth or metal, and we have received numerous emails and letters from teenagers, as well as their parents, who describe how important Arsenik has become to them. We have been moved by these letters, as well by the older punks and metalheads who travel from afar to visit the shop.
Arsenik has also become a forum for up and coming artists, artisans and designers who have been able to display and sell their work inside the shop.
Cecilia has been persistent in that there has to be a heartfelt intention behind what is being sold in the shop and many of the objects on display have been carefully chosen. Our priorities have been the unique rather than the mass produced, choosing to support official merch but also ecological and vegan products.
We have tapped into the global network within punk so as to be able to support small designers who really care for the art of creating and we have filled the shop with their clothes and jewelry.
We also collaborate with other European small shops and record labels as well as a punk shop in Jakarta. In Sweden we collaborate with local labels and distros such as Not Enough Records, Mangel Productions and Rundgång so as to provide a room with vinyls.
Still, as a consequence of the Corona-pandemic we are behind on many of our payments, taxes, and VAT. Arsenik relies a lot on payment after delivery, that is, what was delivered in October, needs to now to be paid in January, etc. A lot of what we sell is also on commission and that has always worked well, however the increased restrictions during the fall, and non-existent holiday sales has meant a hard blow for the shop. And when both Oskar and Cecilia fell ill from Covid-19, three weeks of sales were lost.
Arsenik is situated in the heart of Malmö, and the plans of the city to rebuild the entire Davidhallsgatan during 2021 won’t really improve things.
We have invested our lives and hearts in this shop, and we would hate to lose it because of a fucking pandemic. We can’t rely on state support, as that is not enough and we are far from the only ones in this situation. But the shop is one of a kind. And we know that many of you share that love and want Arsenik to stay alive.
Arsenik is funded on sustainability, inclusion, reycling and environmental concerns, we strive to be local node within a global network.
