My dad is the strongest man I know. A dedicated Army veteran, he’s someone who has always put his family before himself. This GoFundMe is the least I can do to show my gratitude for all he’s done for us.

Last Christmas, our world turned upside down. My dad caught the flu from my daughter, his beloved granddaughter. What started as the flu quickly developed into pneumonia, and within hours, turned into life-threatening sepsis. Early Christmas morning, he told my mom and sister he couldn’t breathe. They rushed him to the ER, where we learned the severity of his condition. He was transferred by helicopter to a hospital out of town—there were no beds nearby. I was by his side in the air, praying he’d make it through, while the rest of our family drove to meet us.

Even as his health declined, my dad kept his sense of humor. He joked with the nurses, keeping our spirits up in the darkest moment of our lives. But as things grew more serious, he began to say his goodbyes. He was terrified of being placed on a ventilator, but with encouragement from my mom—his soulmate and the love of his life—he agreed, giving his body a fighting chance. We barely slept for weeks, keeping vigil over him, watching every heartbeat, every breath, praying without ceasing.

Miraculously, just after New Year’s Day, my dad was taken off the ventilator. It was the greatest gift we could’ve received. Just as he came home, we learned he had cancer. His weakened immune system made him vulnerable to the infections that had ravaged his body. Since then, he hasn’t been able to return to work, and the medical bills have been staggering.
