Hi, my name is Armanae Lewis. Me, my girlfriend, & my friends went out on Halloween night, Oct 31st. Upon returning home around 2am on Nov 1st, we were rear-ended on I-85 by a drunk driver. A Hispanic woman going 100mph in a 55. She hit us while fleeing from another accident she caused. As her vehicle erupted into flames, she attempted to flee the scene on foot. In confusion, she ran back to the scene and was then apprehended.
My girlfriend & I were sitting on the side that was directly impacted, so we sustained the worst injuries. She endured a fractured pelvis in two different places, 2 broken ribs, a cut-up liver, a fractured neck, and a fractured spine. I was unconscious on the scene. I regained consciousness on Nov 3rd with severe lesions on my kidney, bladder, and spleen. My liver failed, my left lung collapsed, my femur dislocated and rammed into my ribs causing a bilateral rib fracture, and I shattered my ENTIRE pelvis. I've had to undergo 3 six-hour reconstruction surgeries on my pelvis, with my family sitting in the waiting room not knowing if I was going to make it. When I came out, my body was completely swollen and unrecognizable. My pelvis is full of plates, pins, needles, and screws. I also have 2 metal rods in my left leg to hold up my pelvis. I was also bleeding internally, I've had 3 blood transfusions, I had an external pacemaker on my chest, I was intubated for 4 days, meaning I had a tube down my throat connected to a machine that was breathing for me, as well as a catheter (pee bag), and I had chest tubes in to drain the blood off my lungs, and I still don’t remember a thing. I only know what I’ve been told.
I have to learn how to walk ALLLLLLLLL over again, I can't do anything for myself. I have to spend 12 weeks in a wheelchair before I can even bear weight on my legs, that's 3 months.... During this time, I can't work. I haven't been to work in 2 weeks. I need help securing my apartment, and I also need help making my townhome wheelchair accessible and preparing for any further surgeries I may need to undergo during this extensive recovery. I am actively still hospitalized.
