Support Arja: A Voice for Diversity in Debate
Donation protected
Debate was not made for me, but I am still here fighting. I am Arja Sarkar, and I am a queer, female, indian debater—three identities rarely seen, let alone celebrated. Every time I walk into a round, I carry not just my notes and laptop, I carry the weight of being the only one like me in the room. No coach prepared me for what it means to stand up and speak truth when your existence is questioned before you say your first word. My experience is often ignored and detested. My own family have told me I am "too emotional" to debate, "Identity does not belong in debate", and that I should "Just run policy." Not only am I silenced but invalidated for who I am. But still, debate has given me a voice. In my constructive speech, I am given the chance to speak uninterrupted. I am empowered at that moment. However, debate is a rich man's game. Only the rich can afford the fees and expensive tournaments to get better at debate. But through determination I was able to get to where I am. But sometimes, determination is not enough. That is why I am calling for support not just for me, but for all the queer female indians in the debate space who I represent whenever I step into my next debate round. By supporting me, you can share and/or give money! Thank you for reading my story.
