Hello everyone! I finally made the decision to self-publish my book, The Devil Take the Blues. It took me approximately 6 years to edit, and I tried for 2 years to find a literary agent. However, I realized that times have indeed changed. I don't have to wait on The Gatekeepers to publish my book.
However, self-publishing has some substantial upfront costs. They are the following:
- Editing-Line edit--$1725
- Proofreading--$175
- Cover Design--$720
- Interior Formatting--$50
- ISBN--$100x4 (print, digital, hardcover, and audiobook)
- Publishing Platform Fees--varies but small
- Proof Copies / Printing--$250
- Professional headshot--$500
- Website--$1000
- Graphics--$250
- I'm also adding 20% to cover unknowns or unexpected fees
These are the basic, core costs of self-publishing. This GoFundMe doesn't take into account marketing or ads, which I will dedicate $1000 of my own money toward in the first year.
The following would be some "nice to have's" which aren't essential but would help:
- Membership to Indie Book Publishers Association--$155
- Book Signing Banner (for when I go to bookstores and such)--$150
- 3-month NetGalley Listing (to generate reviews)--$300 with IBPA membership or $600 without
- Book reviews (such as Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, etc.) $425 - $575 per review. Professional review sites help because they a) publish them in their journal, and b) it lets people know of the professionalism of my book, attracting other opportunities
I have really appreciated everyone's support in the past. I'm going to self-publish no matter what, but every little bit from friends and family helps. I've already lined up interviews with The Gothic Podcast and She Wore Black Podcast, so this train is a rollin'!
Out of the thousands of worthy causes, thank you for considering mine.
Best,
Ariel
