Hello, my name is Ariadna Fernández, I am 26 years old, married to Miqueas and I have two beautiful children, Giovanni who is 5 and Alba who is 3. Today I want to share a bit of my current story. About three years ago, I began to lose some of my basic senses such as hearing, smell, and taste. I continued with my "normal" life until July 2024 when the symptoms became more severe. I sought professional help from an otolaryngologist who referred me to the Central Hospital of Mendoza. After some studies to find the cause of my hearing loss, they detected a brain tumor called a neurinoma. It is 6cm in size and is located on the left auditory nerve. Due to its large size, the brain stem was displaced, and it also blocked ducts, triggering active hydrocephalus that compromised my vision and put my vital health at risk.
On October 28, I was admitted to the hospital where I am still hospitalized to this day. On November 22, I underwent my first surgical intervention, a triple ventriculostomy, where they drained cerebrospinal fluid that was affecting my vision. After this, the discomfort eased. On Wednesday, December 10, I went back to the operating room with an excellent team of neurosurgeons. After 16 hours of surgery, they managed to remove 64% of the tumor. I spent three days in intensive care to receive the necessary care. This surgery left facial paralysis on the left side, which is being treated by a team of kinesiologists, dermatologists, and ophthalmologists. My recovery is going well, and I am in the process of recovery. This process will take time, and I hope to return home soon.
The 3rd surgery will take place next month.
Today everything is different because in these situations that life puts you in, you learn to value even the smallest things that life gives you. I am waiting for new medical reports to know if a third intervention is necessary to remove the rest of the tumor or if there is an alternative therapy.
