Hi. My name is Arawan Yang, and I am 12 years old. I am a passionate about Hmong dance, as it incorporates a living experience of culture, education and arts. Hmong dancing is more than just a hobby for me—it is a deep connection to my culture, my identity, and my community. Through every movement, I carry the traditions of my people and express a story that has been passed down for generations.
It has always been my dream to not only participate but to truly excel—to earn a place among the best dancers in my group. I want to represent my culture with pride, grace, and excellence. However, there is a significant challenge standing in my way.
In Hmong dance, traditional outfits are not just costumes—they are a vital part of the performance. Each piece reflects beauty, history, and cultural pride. To properly participate and compete, dancers are required to have at least four different outfits. Each outfit costs between $250 and $500, bringing the total to approximately $1,000 to $2,000 or more. Unfortunately, this cost is difficult for me to afford. I am going out of my way to ask for my community support, and not my parents because this is my dream. I want to hold for myself accountable to provide the things that I need. This is also a journey to prove that I can become an independent individual and don’t need to rely on my love ones.
I am reaching out to every one of you with a humble heart to ask for your support. Any contribution, no matter how small, will help me get closer to achieving my dream. Your generosity would not only provide me with the necessary attire but also give me the opportunity to fully participate, grow, and represent the Hmong community with confidence.
This journey means everything to me. It is not just about dance—it is about honoring my heritage, making my family proud, and proving to myself that with dedication and support, dreams can come true.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for considering supporting me. Your kindness will forever be a part of my journey.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Arawan Yang
