On July 16th, my 9 year old Teacup Yorkie Apolo, had a seizure and fell from the couch onto our tiled floor, suffering a major head injury and resulting in a fractured skull. Apolo has a long history of seizures which we’ve tried to manage as best we can, through life-style adjustments and testing common medications prescribed by the vet. The combined seizure and head trauma left Apolo lying unresponsive - we were unable to detect a heart beat and we feared the worst. We immediately rushed him to the nearest veterinary clinic, during which we started to see slight signs of life, giving us a little hope.
The clinic took Apolo straight through and started to examine him, but unfortunately were unable to provide care due to a lack of emergency vets on call. I then drove him to the Advanced Veterinary Care Center in Davie, where he went under re-examination. After much deliberation by the vets, they decided there was nothing they could do and didn’t believe he would ever recover - due to this prognosis, they advised Apolo be put to sleep.
While Apolo lay in critical condition, I decided to seek a second opinion, as we refused to accept that putting him to sleep was the only option. We decided to move him again, this time via ambulance, to a neurologist at the Southeast Veterinary Neurology in Boynton Beach. He then underwent further examination, tests and an MRI scan.
The scans eventually indicated something previously not detected by the other two clinics, namely that the build up of fluid on the brain was actually blood, and meant we may not have to operate and instead let the inflammation subside over time with medication.
During all this time, Apolo was being supplied oxygen, as he was unable to breathe naturally. He also had a deviated eye, undoubtedly as a result of the fall.
After a few days of intensive care, Apolo’s Hemoglobin count fell very low, and the clinic suggested Apolo be given a blood transfusion to help his body repair itself.
I am very thankful to every single Doctor that has treated Apolo, and I thank God for all the strength Apolo has had up to now, and the fact I was still there when everything happened to help him.
Apolo is still under constant supervision at the Neurologist, but every day we are seeing small improvements on his long road to recovery. As you can imagine, this all comes at a financial cost. The veterinary bills are currently over $26,000 and climbing. I wanted to share all this to ask for your help if you can, help me save my little baby even if it is only to share his story. He is a small dog, but has a huge, loving character. Apolo is my everything❤️
I’m so very grateful that you’ve read this far - all this is for Apolito to see his beautiful smile for many more times to come.
