The time is almost here! My son - Anthony Maxey - has been planning to donate his kidney to a friend in need for years now. He's gone through the process, did all the required legwork, scans, medical appts, pysch evals, and information sessions since 2020. He now, after 4 years, is scheduled to have surgery on 7/3/24 to donate his kidney to a friend who is in renal failure. He's excited - but nervous at the thought of bills and the recovery process.
He hasn't mentioned this donation to most people. The comments range from: "What if you need a kidney in the future?" "why would you do that - is this person THAT good of a friend?" "Are you sure - you're young, you should rethink this." As his mom - people pull me aside and try to have me talk him out of it and although the comments come out of a place of concern - it weighs on him. He's really trying to do something good, he wants to save a friend, and I for one am super proud of him for making this sacrifice.
I pledge to do all I can for him, but I'm hoping starting a fund will help ease his mind a bit.
