Annie's cancer journey began in 2015 with her initial diagnosis of breast cancer, followed by a successful lumpectomy surgery. Six years later, shortly after the birth of our daughter, we learned that the cancer had returned and metastasized to her femur bone, and later her liver. After several years of chemo/radiation through Duke and a trial at MSK, the cumulative effects of treatment have taken a toll on her overall health. While this latest chemo regimen has shown some promise, Annie currently is not well enough to continue treatment, and we are now focusing on improving her nutrition so that she can restart appointments.
This journey has been excruciatingly difficult not only physically and emotionally, but financially as well. Over the past four years we have been reluctant to ask for money, but as premiums have risen and medical debt accumulates year over year, we can no longer keep ahead of it. This year alone, the medical costs billed to our insurance will eclipse $1.1M. Thankfully, we have excellent health insurance that pays 99% of this, but as the years go by, the medical debt increases faster than we can pay it off.
As a community, you have given so much to us already that it is hard to ask for more. However, we know people want to help in any way they can, and making a donation would go a long way to relieving this burden - giving us one less thing to worry about during this difficult time. As always, we are grateful beyond words for the support.
With gratitude,
Darren & Annie
