My Step-Dad Andy Covington ended 2025 and started the New Year in the hospital with a flesh eating bacteria. He had not one emergency surgery but two that ended with one less arm. And no insurance. It began on Monday 12/29 Andy wasn’t feeling well. On Tuesday he said his arm hurt and felt swollen. On Wednesday my mom brought Andy to the ER because his arm was swollen. Within 1/2 hr his entire arm was doubley swollen and visibly turning colors (could see the color “crawl” up his arm) within another 15 minutes he was having emergency surgery. They were going to cut down his arm to relieve the swelling. After that surgery he was taken to St. Mary’s in Duluth. He had to have another surgery with a team of trauma surgeons. His arm had to be amputated above the shoulder. Friday 1/2 he had another surgery to clean it up (took out more dead tissue). On 1/4 he had his 4th surgery to cover the surgical site with skin. Andy was just moved out of ICU after two weeks, with one of those weeks being intubated. The surgeons determined he had a flesh eating bacteria called Clostridium Septicum. There’s about 70% chance that the bacteria was caused by colon cancer.. A CT scan was done and it showed some spots on his liver. Andy had a biopsy done on his liver. During the biopsy they found a hard mass on his liver. They took a couple bits of it for testing. The result; It is cancer. What kind and what stage, we have no idea. Drs are thinking the cancer on his liver spread from his colon. Testing to be done at a later time. Andy is no where near being out of the woods. He’ll be in the hospital for a while yet (not in icu, thank God!) Then from there he’ll have to go to rehab. And in the midst of that he’ll need more testing done to get specifics about his cancer. Please lend a hand to help my mom and Andy pay down these medical bills!
