Our very own co-worker, Andres "Andy" Perez (for over 4 years employed with LeeHealth, and our steady pillar in the Open Heart ICU), went at the end of July to visit Ecuador and to celebrate the birthday of his elderly grandfather in his native country with their extended family. At the beginning of August, Andy and his cousins went hiking to El Cajas National Park (Ecuador), which is known for its beautiful wildlife and quite rocky landscape. On this rainy, windy day, unfortunately, Andy slipped on the hiking trail and fell downhill. While trying to control his fall in a sitting position, he hit a rock with his lower back. Shortly after, he stated he felt unable to move. His cousins got him out of the park to a local clinic, which referred him right away to the nearest biggest hospital for immediate spinal/back surgery.

He was discharged to the home of his extended family, but only since a few days ago, he is able for a short time to stand upright. For now, he is physically unable to take a flight back home to the US, and the surgeon's recommendation is not to travel at least before the end of the month.

This puts a very physical and financial strain (running out of PTO, medical bills in Ecuador, follow-up care/rehab back home) on this 24-year-old hardworking young man and his family. Everyone who knows him, works with him, knows what a good-mannered, always pleasant, and funny to be around co-worker he is. He has such a gift and patience with our patients in a sometimes very stressful environment. You ask Andy anything... we always get the same answer, "I got you, buddy!"

Maybe now is the time to show some support, help this young man out to get back on track... and say "We got you, Andy!!"
