Support Andy Bishop

Update: Andy Is On the Mend

We’re happy to share that Andy arrived home on February 22nd after receiving care at MD Anderson in Houston since early December. He’s steadily recovering and his body is adjusting well to frequent, small meals.

Andy is now able to go on longer walks, and he’s no longer reliant on TPN or supplemental nutrition. He still has a stint in place to allow his esophagus to fully heal, which will be removed during a follow-up trip to Houston in mid-March.

Overall, Andy is making progress. He’ll continue to build strength and stamina as he works toward resuming his daily routines.

With his care now fully underway at home, we will be closing this GoFundMe page and will no longer be accepting donations. We are deeply grateful for all of your generous support, messages, and encouragement. They mean the world to Andy throughout this journey.

Update: Signs of Steady Progress

Andy has now been out of the hospital for several days, marking one of his longest stretches outside the hospital since surgery just before Christmas. He remains in Houston, close to his care team, as recovery continues.

The repairs to his digestive tract are holding, the infection has subsided, and he is able to eat small, frequent meals; encouraging signs as he takes careful steps forward. His medical team continues to monitor him closely to ensure steady progress.

As always, thank you for the continued donations, messages, and support. Your care and encouragement have made it possible for Andy and his care team and friends to focus on healing. We will continue to pass along messages, which mean a great deal to him.

Thank you for being part of this journey with him.

Update & With Deepest Gratitude

We want to share a brief update on Andy’s condition. After a short discharge from the hospital, Andy was readmitted due to further complications. His medical team is currently assessing next steps, and it is likely he will need an additional surgery. He remains in good hands at MD Anderson, and we are grateful for the close monitoring and care he’s receiving as the team determines the best path forward.

In the midst of this uncertainty, the support from this community has been nothing short of extraordinary.

In just one week, this fundraiser has grown far beyond what we could have imagined. Our original goal was $22,000, and thanks to your generosity, it has now surpassed $57,000. We are deeply moved by the outpouring of love, donations, messages, and shares.

Because of you, Andy and his family are supported not only through his current course of care in Houston, but across the full scope of treatment over the past year and the extended recovery that now lies ahead. This fundraiser reflects the wide circle of people Andy has touched and the strength of the community standing behind him every step of the way.

Given the complexity of his condition and the uncertainty around his recovery timeline, we will be keeping the fundraiser open as care continues.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

Thank you for showing up.
Thank you for giving so generously.
Thank you for surrounding Andy and his family with strength, compassion, and love

Support Andy Bishop’s Fight Against Cancer

On behalf of Andy’s friends and family, we’ve created this fundraiser to support someone who has given so much to so many: Andy Bishop.

You may know Andy from the start line of bike or ski races, where his quiet determination and competitive spirit shine. Maybe he captured your wedding day through his photography, or showed you how math matters in real life in his recent years as a teacher. You may also know him as a coach, someone who has guided athletes of all ages and levels, from young competitors finding their footing to those competing at the highest levels of sport.

No matter the role, Andy shows up with the same humility, patience, and belief in others. He is a pillar of our community, and his impact throughout New England and the cycling world has been both deep and lasting.

Andy’s Journey

About a year ago, Andy received a diagnosis that shook us all: stage 4 stomach and peritoneal cancer, along with cancer in a lymph node. From the outset, he has faced this with remarkable strength and resolve.

Andy underwent an aggressive course of systemic chemotherapy, twice the standard amount, followed by radiation therapy to address the lymph node cancer. He then moved into the next phase of care in Houston, Texas, where he received highly specialized treatment for his rare cancer, including a total gastrectomy (removal of the stomach) and HIPEC chemotherapy, a groundbreaking procedure used to treat cancer within the abdominal cavity.

These treatments have been very successful against his cancer and represent meaningful progress in a diagnosis that once felt overwhelming.

However, the road has been far from easy. Following surgery, Andy experienced a serious complication, a leak at the surgical connection between his esophagus and intestines. This led to infections and required three additional surgeries to repair. As a result, what was expected to be a shorter stay in Texas has become a much longer and more demanding one, both physically and financially.

How You Can Help

Because of these unexpected complications, Andy is facing significant additional expenses to remain near his medical team and continue receiving the lifesaving care he needs.

We are raising funds to help cover:

  • Out of pocket medical expenses
  • Extended travel costs to Houston, TX
  • Prolonged lodging and daily living expenses during recovery

Andy has always been there for others; as a friend, teacher, athlete, photographer, and coach. Now, we are asking for help to be there for him.

Any amount makes a difference. If you are unable to donate, sharing this campaign is a powerful way to support Andy and his family.

With love and gratitude,
Andy’s friends and family
