Support Andrew's Road to Recovery

Donation protected
Hello. I am Alexis Newfer and I set up this Go Fund Me account on behalf of my cousin, Andrew Slough.

On Thursday, June 20th in the evening, Andrew was out riding his new and beloved Honda motorcycle when he was struck by an SUV on Trenton Ave in Findlay, OH.

Andrew was rushed to Blanchard Valley hospital and eventually life flighted to Saint V’s to under go emergency surgery.

The CT scan showed no signs of head injuries or internal injuries but Andrew has two broken legs. His right leg is broken at the knee and his patella tendon is severely severed. His left leg is broke at femur and he is missing part of his femur bone. We are currently unsure if his hips are broken due to too much inflammation on the CT scan. Once he is in surgery, we will know more.

If you feel so inclined to help donate any amount and say a prayer for Andrew, our family would so graciously appreciate those gestures.

Andrew has a long road of recovery ahead of him! We know that he is such a positive and upbeat human being that would do anything for anyone. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

Updates will come soon!!!

Update on Andrew Slough - Friday, June 21 - 9:20am

He just went into surgery.

It was pushed back due to a brain bleed they discovered. They had him in traction all morning and had externally pinned one leg straight. There is no time frame for the surgery due to extend of broken bones and the multiple pieces. It was also found his hip is broken. Numerous surgeries will need to happen to get his hips and legs back to where they need to be for recovery to happen.

Please continue to keep Drew and our family in your thoughts and prayers.

Friday, June 21 - 9:40pm Quick Update on Andrew
After close to 11 hours of surgery he is now resting in ICU. There are several updates from surgery that I will fill everyone in on tomorrow. Our family is mentally, emotionally, and physically exhausted and we all need to take a moment to rest.

He has a phenomenal orthopedic doctor! Please continue your prayers and once we have a chance to put all the surgery updates together, I will let everyone know. Thank you for the prayers and support thus far with Andrew’s recovery.

Saturday, June 22: 9:35am -- Update post surgery #1

Andrew was in surgery for close to 11 hours on Friday. They discovered he also suffered a broken wrist, a simple break that was quick to take care of. Despite the brain bleed, his operations on his lower extremities needed done. Andrew will be at St. Vincent’s for a few weeks.

On to the right leg, the most damage.

His orthopedic doctor, Doctor Phillips, who has been amazing thus far, said Andrew has one of the worst broken femur he has seen and this took a very long time to work on. It took a while for the doctor to remove the broken bone fragments and debris from the accident. While his patellar tendon is okay, which was thought to be severed. Andrew is missing close to 3 inches of his femur and this will result in several surgeries to come. His right leg is pinned so they can continue to stretch his muscle through traction, until they can begin the process of bone grafting to regenerate his femur bone. He can not move this leg for 10 weeks and will need a bone graft completed. They will fill his leg with cement to allow for scar tissue to grow. Then they will need to do a bone graft from somewhere on his body to help regenerate the growth of a new femur bone. This is going to result in many more surgeries to come. The risk of infection in his laceration is high.

His left leg, the lesser severe of the two, has a rod placed in it and his hip is put back together with pins and screws. The plan is to have him up and completing physical therapy on this leg soon.

While Andrew could possibly never walk “normal” again, and it will be evident that he suffered some type of trauma to his lower extremities, BUT doctors said that he will one day be walking again! This is a miracle from God and helps keep our spirits high.

After surgery, Andrew was taken back for a CT scan to monitor his brain bleed, which is minimal now. They also removed the tube in his throat and woke him up this morning. Andrew is talking and so thankful for the love and support everyone has shown!

Today is a rest day, tomorrow will bring surgery #2! Please continue with the thoughts and prayers.

Sunday Update on Andrew Slough

Surgery has been postponed until tomorrow morning due to other emergency surgeries the doctor needed to be at. Andrew has been resting most of the day. His pain is tolerable with the medication he’s receiving. He’s been moved out of ICU to a step down unit. They removed two of the drainage bags from his hip and one leg.

He is so thankful for the continued thoughts and prayers! I’ll have another update tomorrow after his second surgery.

Monday, June 24- 7:50pm — Surgery #2 update

Today Andrew has his second surgery. This was just a debridement to clean the wound on his right leg. Possibly going in Wednesday for his third surgery to fill his leg with cement to begin building scar tissue for the bone graft in order to regrow the femur. He did finally eat a small meal but still has barely any appetite. Pain is still tolerable with his medication. When he was moved down a unit, his first room was tiny and hard for him to see visitors, so he was assigned a new room which is much better!

Continue prayers and sharing the Go Fund Me!

Wednesday, June 26th - 9:00pm -Surgery #3 update f

Today was Drew’s third surgery. This was a 6 hour surgery. They had to open up his right leg again and check for infection. Since there was no infection, his surgery was able to continue. He had the antibiotic cement and a rod placed through this right femur in order to grow scar tissue for an up and coming bone graft in a couple months. They removed the external fixater from his right leg and his drainage tubes. All of his lacerations are now closed. He can’t bear weight on his right leg for 6-8 weeks. He is supposed to begin physical therapy tomorrow for his left leg. He still has 2 staples in his head. The agenda for the rest of today was to rest as much as possible. His spirits are still good, but pain was high.

Keep those prayers and thoughts coming!

Update - Thursday, July 25th

It’s has been a busy couple of weeks for Andrew. He was medically transported to Toledo to see the orthopedic surgeon. The six hour visit, included removing all of his staples from his hip and both legs and getting a new shorter cast on his wrist. He was exhausted after that visit. Only to have to make that trip again a couple days later to see the neurosurgeon. He was cleared and does not have to return to the neurosurgeon again.

He has been pushing himself very hard in physically therapy and has been able to stand on his left leg. Andrew has got to sit up in his recliner and has even been able to walk/hop on his left leg since he is still not allowed to bear weight on his right leg. He will go back in a few weeks to see the orthopedic surgeon and possibly to have his cast on his wrist removed and be cleared to begin bearing weight on the right leg. Once the doctor assesses his leg, then they may be able to schedule the next surgery, which would be the bone graft.

His spirits are still very good and he is a model patient and appreciates all the calls and visits he’s received.
