On Saturday, January 10th, 2026, my son Andrew Varela was walking home after running out of gas less than a mile from our house. Tragically, he was struck by a car and has been at the Marcus Trauma Center at Grady in Atlanta ever since. Andrew suffered multiple broken bones, including compound fractures in his left leg that required surgery, a broken shoulder blade and collarbone, broken ribs, and a lung injury. He also experienced head trauma with a slight brain injury and a laceration that required 16 staples.

Thanks to GOD and the incredible team of doctors, Andrew is progressing quickly, but our journey is far from over. We do not have insurance, and Andrew will need ongoing physical therapy, medication, and possibly another surgery on his leg. When we return home, I plan to care for him myself as much as possible, but the costs are overwhelming.
