This year was supposed to be about putting myself first, but life had other plans. At 43, I was finally getting all my annual appointments in order when I discovered a lump on my right breast. After a whirlwind of tests—mammograms, biopsies, ultrasounds, CT scans, blood work, and genetic testing—my world changed in just a month and a half. Instead of planning for my babysister’s wedding in October, I’m now preparing for chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. Breast cancer doesn’t run in my family, but here I am, facing it head-on and trying to stay positive through all the emotions.
Treatment starts on 9/10, and I’ve quickly realized how many unexpected costs come with this diagnosis. Health insurance doesn’t cover everything, especially things like cold capping to help save my hair during chemo. I want to try it so I can feel like myself as much as possible, even though it doesn’t work for everyone. On top of medical expenses, there are travel costs, gas, food, hotels, and pet sitting to manage while I’m away from home for treatment. Life is expensive and especially with an illness added into the mix. My husband will be my biggest supporter, and while we’re far from friends and family, I know their love and help are always there when we need it.
I’ve always been a hard worker and love what I do. I plan to keep working as long as I can, but I worry about how treatment might affect that. Cooking, writing poetry, playing video games, going to the gym, movies, and traveling are all things I love and hope to get back to once I’m through this. I never thought I’d be asking for help, but anything you can give—big or small—will make a difference for us as we navigate this journey.
