ANDREA'S CANCER JOURNEY
My name is Laura Blair and I'm fundraising for my dear friend, Andrea Nelson, who is currently battling stage 4 breast cancer.
Andrea was first diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer over a decade ago. After surgery and multiple treatments, she emerged cancer-free with a renewed appreciation for life. At that time, she was a mom to 2 young children, working full time, in grad school, and relieved to put that chapter behind her.
Unfortunately, cancer had other plans, and returned in 2019, shockingly, at stage 4.
The good news is that some late-stage cancers are now managed like a chronic condition as new, more effective treatments are always in the pipeline. Many people now survive and thrive for years, even decades, with proper treatment. This is her intention!
Andrea has purposely not discussed her journey as cancer does not define her. In fact, if you see her, you would probably agree that she looks quite healthy!
She does not want pity, "sad eyes" or anyone feeling sorry for her! She realizes this is her unique journey and intends to continue leading the full life she always has.
She welcomes your prayers, well wishes and positive support. With the benefits of cancer research and evidence-based alternatives, she looks forward to many years of stability and eventually, full remission.
HOW ANDREA IS DOING NOW
Recently the cancer has become more aggressive and resistant to treatment. She just came through a very rough period of several months, which is why she has finally agreed to a fundraiser.
She continues to work full time and loves her work providing care to dementia patients and their families. As she continues to care for others, it's our turn to care for her.
HOW YOU CAN HELP: COVERING TREATMENT COSTS
Cancer isn't just a physical and emotional battle—it’s a financial one as well. Even with excellent insurance, she has outstanding medical bills and other added costs.
She has had success the last 6 years using an integrative approach, pairing conventional oncology treatments with alternative and complementary therapies. At one point, she was in remission for 2 years with Chinese herbs alone. But cancer is sneaky and finds ways to progress despite best efforts.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR TREATMENT
She is seeking support to manage medical expenses and to pursue treatments that, although quite effective, are not covered by insurance. These therapies offer hope, comfort, and enhance quality of life. Unfortunately, the costs are overwhelming, and she cannot manage them alone.
She has already gone into significant debt managing her treatments for the last 6 years.
Your donation will go directly toward:
- Out-of-pocket medical expenses not covered by insurance including deductibles, co-payments and other unreimbursed expenses.
- Evidence-based alternative therapies and consults with integrative providers to complement conventional treatment.
- Nutritional support including supplements, Chinese herbs and other interventions.
- Travel and treatment expenses.
This puts the monthly costs at a minimum of $5,000.
