Support and Medical Costs for Jess and Brody

Donation protected
On Thursday, December 3, 2020, my wife Jessica Charters had to be induced for high blood pressure. Our son's original due date was December 13, 2020. Everything was going pretty well until Friday. Jess wasn't dilating quickly and was on a round of Pitocin, when the midwives broke her water.

Instead of things progressing from there, Jess started to bleed heavily. The OB/GYN on call for emergencies came in to assess things further and said she needed an immediate emergency c-section. Several minutes later, we were in the operating room, where things moved at a rapid-fire pace and our son was delivered. However, there were no sounds coming from Brody, indicating his presence in the room.

He was immediately taken to the Resuscitation Room, where medical staff worked to bring him back. I say bring him back because his vitals were normal before the emergency. Brody was blue and purple. I sat in the Resuscitation Room with Brody, and said a prayer. Four minutes later, he started to breathe. But quickly needed additional medical assistance with his breathing. His muscle tone was poor and he was still bluish purple. After a while, I do not know the exact amount of time, his color started to change and he was responsive. The staff said he was angry and a fighter.

I went back up to our room to check on Jess, who was loopy from the drugs and surgery. Then I informed loved ones about the situation. When I came back to Jess, she was doing okay, considering everything that had happened. But then she started to bleed again and this time she was taken to the main OR. After three hours, I saw Jess again.

Brody also continued to improve. However, staff said he may need to be transported to a different hospital because he could have sustained some neurological damage. And he was on a CPAP bubble machine, had an IV through his umbilical cord, and in the NICU. At this time, he remains in the NICU. But he didn't have to be transported to a different location.

Jess is doing much better, having received a blood transfusion. The staff said that she nearly died twice. But she's a fighter, as is my son, and Jess gets to come home Tuesday with an estimated eight-week road to recovery where she can do very little. Brody is now eating pretty well and we don't know when he gets to come home.

The money from this campaign will go to medical expenses, mental and physical therapy, and providing support to Jess and Brody. We also have a three-year-old daughter. Fortunately, she didn't have to see any of the traumatizing events of these past several days. Thank you in advance for any support.

If you want to verify any of this, we were at Intermountain Hospital in Layton, UT.
