Hi friends,
Last weekend, Anakin took a what seemed like an unremarkable tumble off the bed. He seemed fine at first, but over the course of an hour or so, it became clear that something was very wrong. A visit to his regular vet, followed by a trip to a neurology specialist, revealed that he has a herniated disc in his spine.
The injury is affecting the nerves in his front legs, making him unable to walk. He has been in obvious discomfort, which we've luckily been able to manage with medication while we figure out how to move forward. And we've spent the last 3 days researching the issue (clinically called "Intervertebral disc disease") and talking (and talking and talking) about what to do. Without treatment, it is very likely that he will experience permanent nerve damage/paralysis.
The good news is that surgery to repair the ruptured disc is relatively straightforward, and has upwards of 95% rate of full recovery! Given that Ani is in otherwise perfect health with many years of rambunctious life ahead of him, we've decided to move forward with the procedure.
Dani and I are generally pretty bad about asking for help, so it's been hard for me to even write this. However, the costs associated with the MRI and surgery are frankly quite staggering, and we can use all the help we can get to give our little four-legged demon a new lease on life. We've set a fundraising goal based on the estimated cost for imaging and surgery with no expectation that to hit that amount—we humbly just ask for any help our friends and loved ones are able to give as we start down a very long road nursing our little guy back to health.
We love and thank all of you, whether or not you're able to help us right now <3
