Support Ana Jokic, highschool teacher and activist in Serbia

After the collapse of the railway canopy in Novi Sad in November of 2024, leaving 16 dead and 1 severely injured, Serbia has been hit by a wave of protests demanding answers but also a fight for democracy, rule of law, end of corruption and shining a light on various problematic areas that need change.

Student-led blockages spread over to over 40 university faculties across Serbia and were joined by also a number high schools.

And my friend, Ana Jokic, is a teacher in one of those high schools in Belgrade.

Ana, a single mother of 3 children(2 under 18 years old), graduated Serbian and Literature in 2001. and has for the last 25 years worked in the same high school. She is also at the moment enrolled in the 3rd year of EAPTI-SEB, institut for Gestalt psychotherapy.

Ana, besides being an amazing human and and a wonderful supportive friend, is one of those teacher you meet in high school who leave a mark on you, inspire you and open new doors for you intellectually and emotionally.

In her heart, soul and actions, she is an activist who believes in justice, education and freedom of thought and speech and through her classes, one on one work and various courses/ workshops she has been there for young people in some of the most delicate ages of their lives.

The government response to the protests has been harsh(in more ways than one) and in Ana's case, beside the constant pressure and intimidation, her salary has been cut by almost 60% (which is highly illegal) with a justice system that cannot support her in a legal battle. The salary will continue to drop with every month of protest.

I started this GoFundMe to help Ana financially but also to gather support for someone who is a background hero of this battle for change(like many other teachers in her position) one who risks her whole job and material existence for a hope of better future.
