Ana Gomez is one of the kindest, most thoughtful, caring individuals many of us know. A native of Costa Rica, Ana has been in the US for several years working on and completing her Master’s and PhD degrees. She has worked tirelessly to support herself and her family while being far from home.
Unfortunately, last week, Ana was the victim of a horrific crime involving identity theft and fraud. The criminals took advantage of Ana’s status as an international student and manipulated her into believing that her legal immigration status in the US was at stake if she did not comply with their demands. At the end of this several-hours long ordeal, Ana had lost 100% of the money in her savings account. Not only was this her entire life-savings, but it was the money she would use to pay for her own expenses here in the US while also providing financial support to her family back in Costa Rica. After reporting the crime to the appropriate federal and local authorities, we were told there is not really any hope of recovering any of the money that was stolen.
While we are thankful she was not physically harmed, the psychological toll this has taken on Ana is immense. She is, of course, staying incredibly strong through the whole process, but undoubtedly, the stress of worrying about her finances is a burden she does not need to carry on her own right now.
For this reason, Isa Castillo-Hernândez and I, Ginny Frederick, are reaching out to Ana’s US friends and family in her time of need. As many of you know, this is not something Ana would ever do on her own. But because she has been such an incredible friend to all of us and helped us through our troubling times, we feel as though this is an opportunity to return the favor of her kindness when she needs our support the most.
At this point, literally ANY financial donation you can make would mean the world to her. If you aren’t in a position to do so, we completely understand and would encourage you to reach out to Ana with words of encouragement and support. Together we can lighten the load of this unsettling time for our incredible friend.
Thank you in advance and please let me know if you have any questions!
