After a lot of thought, I’ve decided to share something personal and ask for help.

Over the past several months, I have been dealing with serious medical complications related to my hip replacement, including ongoing inflammation, fluid accumulation, multiple procedures, drain placements, and continued evaluation for possible infection. Despite significant pain and mobility limitations, I have continued teaching whenever physically possible, including using a borrowed wheelchair at work so I could continue supporting my students in the Structured Learning Classroom.

Unfortunately, the combination of ongoing procedures and recovery time exhausted my sick leave. I applied for assistance through the district’s Sick Leave Assistance Bank, but my request was ultimately denied due to a gap involving short-term disability eligibility and non-consecutive absences.

As a result, my pay will be significantly reduced next month while medical expenses and basic living expenses continue to grow. I have always been someone who struggles to ask for help, but right now I truly need it.

I am in my 18th year teaching in Shawnee Mission, including seven years in the Structured Learning Classroom serving students with significant support needs. My students, coworkers, friends, and family mean the world to me, and I am hopeful that with continued treatment and recovery, I will be able to return to full strength.
