Hate Crime Victims and Their Hero: Zach Owen

Tax deductible
Bawi Cung and his two boys, aged 2 & 6, were hate crime victims in Midland, TX on March 14, 2020. The suspect thought the Burmese family was Chinese and spreading the coronavirus and attacked them with a knife. As a bystander, Zach Owen disarmed the suspect bare handedly. Unfortunately, Zach’s right palm also suffered permanent injury and the grip strength is down to 40%.

In the video, Zach described the hate crime incident and his injury with more details in his testimony at a “Tri-caucus Congressional Forum on Rise in Anti-Asian Bigotry during the COVID-19 Pandemic” on August 10, 2020,

With the hope to find a better job in the west Texas oil field, Zach came to Midland from Oklahoma. Unfortunately, the injury disqualifies him from many oil field jobs. He has also been treated for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Zach is now considering to move back to Oklahoma. The first $50,000  of donation will still be given to Zach on or before his birthday in mid-January 2021 to pay for his ongoing out-of-pocket medical bills, cover some of the financial deficit incurred due to the reduced working hours during his recovery period, and also help with Zach’s return to a normal life. We need more heroes like Zach Owen.

We are sorry to report that after we launched the fundraiser, Zach Owen had an auto accident in Midland, TX on December 10, 2020. The car was totaled. The first $10,000 above the original $50,000 goal will be used to buy a used car for Zach Owen and donations above $60,000 will be split 50-50 between Zach and  Bawi Cung's two boys for treating the knife scars on their faces.
