Hello friends!
It’s been one year since Mohammed and his family arrived in the U.S. from Afghanistan to begin a new life, safe from the Taliban. It took us more than two years of advocacy to get them out, with the generous help of many friends in the government, the military, and aid organizations.
They have made enormous progress here in their new country with a home, one child in school, and some work opportunities. However, finding lasting employment, capable of supporting a family of four, has proven difficult and often takes time for new arrivals here. And, as we quickly discovered, financial help from the government and refugee aid organizations runs out quickly. In addition, Mohammed had a recent medical emergency requiring surgery and - as you’re likely aware - Medicaid benefits are limited.
They don’t need much at this stage, but a modest emergency fund would be an enormous relief for them. Our target of $7500 is intended to cover their needs for several months as they renew their apartment lease, send a second child to school, and await full-time work. As you consider, remember that even small donations can make a difference to bridge their family to more stable times.
Many thanks to all of you and here’s to peace in the New Year!
Jim
