Support Amir's Health Recovery

Donation protected
Dear Family & Friends,

I am creating this gofundme on behalf of my older brother, Amir Nave. As some of you may know, Amir has been hospitalized and receiving medical treatment for a little over a month now and has a long journey ahead until he is fully recovered and back to his optimal health.

On April 17th, 2024, Amir was rushed in an ambulance from an urgent care to JFK Hospital in Edison, NJ. He wasn't feeling well and was experiencing difficulty breathing. It was determined at JFK Hospital that Amir had pneumonia and it was significant on his right lung and he was immediately given oxygen in an attempt to improve his ability to breathe. This attempt did not provide the support that Amir needed, and it was determined, just two days later, that he needed to be put on a ventilator and would need to be transferred to another hospital to be put on ECMO/life-support to support the function of his lungs.

The process of transferring Amir to another hospital was not easy, as not all local hospitals have the appropriate equipment and staff needed to support ECMO treatment and many hospitals within NJ were at capacity and did not have the availability to accept him as a patient. In the midst of searching for a hospital that would accept him, Amir experienced cardiac arrest as a result of not receiving ECMO support in a timely manner. Thankfully, Amir was able to recover from cardiac arrest and shortly received approval to transfer to another hospital that would have the resources that he needed. Due to these circumstances, the only hospital available to accept Amir for ECMO treatment was NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Hospital in New York, New York. This placed Amir almost 2 hours away from family and friends to aid in his support and recovery, but it was his saving grace, and allowed him to receive the best care for his condition.

While at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Hospital's Medical Intensive Care Unit, Amir endured several procedures and treatments to aid in his recovery, including dialysis to rehabilitate the functioning of his kidneys and receiving a tracheostomy to aid in his oxygen support. These procedures collectively resulted in him reaching a stable condition and the ability to be transferred from the MICU and NYPCU Hospital to a hospital in New Jersey to continue respiratory therapy.

Today, Amir is continuing respiratory therapy at a rehabilitative hospital in Northern New Jersey and is making small progress each day to aid in his full recovery. This includes regaining his ability to speak, eat, and slowly working towards regaining his ability to stand, sit, and walk. While Amir has made significant progress from mid-April, he still has a long journey ahead as he continues in-patient therapy for both his respiratory and physical health, in addition to continuing dialysis.

As you can imagine, this unexpected change in Amir's health has disrupted his normal life and has created a significant financial burden that he is attempting to navigate. Prior to Amir's hospitalization, he worked as a Behavioral Health Residential Counselor at a group home for teenage boys and as a Boys' Basketball Coach. He has always been passionate about mentoring youth and imparting his wisdom on others as a way to serve within his community. Those that know Amir personally, know how much of a joy he is to be around and how important these aspects of his life are to him.

Since, Amir has been displaced from work as a result of his medical condition and expected ongoing treatment, he has had to take a medical leave from work and is in the process of applying for and receiving disability. However, this process and the response time from the Department of Labor has proven to be a bit delayed. In the meantime, Amir is faced with navigating how to pay for his bills that existed prior to his sickness and paying out-of-pocket for his health insurance as a result of the medical leave from his employment. The donations received from this gofundme will go directly towards paying for these expenses.

The ongoing support from family, friends, coworkers, and past mentors and teachers of Amir has been immense. It has truly uplifted his spirits and kept him motivated mentally and emotionally as he is continually trying to stay positive in the midst of adversity. Your continued support will be immensely appreciated as Amir continues on his journey to regaining his health.

With sincere gratitude,
Ameerah <3
