A Message From Aretha Collins: Help My Grandson Amir Clear His Freshman Housing Balance and Register for Spring

My grandson, Amariyahu aka “Amir”, graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta as a highly decorated student in 2025. Amir ranked in the top 10% of his graduating class, earned recognition for a high SAT score, and received multiple scholarships and grants. He worked hard for every single award.

Amir began school in August of 2025, and is currently a freshman in his 2nd semester at Chapman University in Orange County, California, where he is studying Software Engineering. Amir is a Thurgood Marshall Scholar, Chapman Dean’s Scholarship recipient, and his tuition is fully covered through various scholarships and grants.

Where we need your help - Chapman University requires all freshman students to live on campus. Amir’s financial aid did not fully cover these required on-campus housing and related fees, leaving a $7,100 outstanding balance on his student account. This balance became clear at the end of the fall semester, and with the spring registration deadline approaching, our timeline to resolve it is short. This is why were asking for a little help for a very deserving young man.

In order for Amir to register for his spring semester class, this balance must be resolved. Once paid, the University will allow him to move forward on a monthly payment plan (as costs are recurring), and Amir is actively seeking employment to help cover ongoing expenses and we are fleshing out future ongoing support plans.

Any funds raised beyond the immediate balance will be applied toward ongoing housing-related costs under the university’s payment plan.

ANY AMOUNT HELPS!!! Please consider donating ASAP as we have until the end of January to reconcile. Myself and my family, and especiailly AMIR are all deeply grateful for your support in helping him continue his education and stay on track academically.

Amir is a young man who shows up, follows through, and deserves continuity. I will go live and share more of his story; believe me even getting to this point has been a victory despite all odds against him. This is a good investment of your resources I promise. Thank you for reading and for any support you’re able to offer.

With Gratitude,

Aretha "SweetHeart" his grandma & Family.
