In her own words.......
As a little girl, my grandmother looked me in the eyes and said, “You’re going to be a doctor one day—be my doctor, please.” I didn’t know it then, but she was planting a seed that would grow through every challenge, every late night, every tear, and every triumph. At the start of high school, I lost her. It was the kind of grief that knocked the wind out of me and made the ground under me feel unsure. At the same time, I was navigating life in a single-parent home, moving across three states, and trying to find my footing in unfamiliar places. But I made a promise, to her and to myself, that I would keep going. I’m now a senior at Westlake High School in Atlanta, ranked in the top 25 out of more than 600 students. I’ve held onto a 4.0 GPA, led in my school and community, and learned how to stay grounded even when everything else around me shifted. I am the girl who stayed long hours after work to make sure things were right, who kept showing up when it would’ve been easier to give up, who listened to others when I could barely hear myself. That grief became my fuel. That instability became my resilience. And the little seed my grandmother planted grew into a calling; I want to be a pediatrician who brings care, comfort, and hope to children. Volunteering at Grady Hospital and shadowing doctors has given me a glimpse of that future. I don’t just want to treat patients— I want to see them, uplift them, and one day return to Ghana to open a clinic that makes healthcare accessible for all. This experience taught me that purpose can be born out of pain and that I carry my grandmother’s hope in everything I do.
