My sweet 5 year old chihuahua, Ambrose, slipped off the back of the couch where he likes to window watch (he got excited when he saw a dog ) and broke his leg on Friday, 10/3. His radius and ulna broke completely across, separating them from his paw. Luckily, I was home to act quickly to rush him to the emergency vet before his adrenaline wore off. My brave boy didn’t even cry and was just excited to see humans at the vet. They said the best option is to attempt surgery with a plate and pins on Monday, 10/6. However, because of the severity of the break and the location being so close to a joint, it will be a difficult surgery. If they’re unsuccessful, amputation is recommended. Fortunately, our pet insurance should cover 80% after a $250 deductible. We were quoted a minimum of $5,500 for the surgery with a maximum of $7,700. The initial visit Friday was $1,299. So, we will end up paying about $1,610 minimum once we get reimbursed.
Timing is always -great- because I had just spent over $700 to get Stevia’s dental work taken care of 3 weeks ago and have yet to hear back from her insurance if we’ll be reimbursed or not - if it’s deemed “cosmetic” despite being necessary for her tooth condition. I also had just saved up and spent my savings on treating myself to a Muay Thai retreat in Thailand for my 30th birthday in 6 weeks. Everything is already booked and paid for. I’ve never traveled outside of the US and have been excited and nervous. Muay Thai has been my saving grace this year, as I’ve felt deeply overwhelmed by life.
Times are really hard for everyone right now, so I don’t expect anything, but if you feel so inclined to donate (a few people have asked if they could) it would be greatly appreciated. More than anything, I’m just grateful that my boy will ultimately be okay (leg or no leg) and have cherished all of the messages of love and support we have received. Thank you.
