Here’s What Happened: On October 27th, my mom was found unresponsive and rushed to the ER. The doctor confirmed this was due to a stroke and that she would need to be airlifted for a critical thrombectomy in Rochester, MN. A thrombectomy is a procedure that involves using a specially-designed clot removal device inserted through a catheter to pull or suck out the clot to restore blood flow. I was told that if this procedure didn't work, my mom would likely be moved into assisted living and spend the rest of her days significantly disabled. Hours passed before I received a call from the neurologist with optimistic news. The procedure was 90% successful and marked a pivotal turning point in what was possible for her recovery. The doctors confirmed that she suffered a massive ischemic stroke on the left side of her brain, where language and right-sided motor function were impacted. Where We Stand Today: So far, she has made a miraculous stride in recovery. The most reassuring thing is that my mom is still my mom. Her personality and sharpness are still part of her. She's active, laughing, and motivated to heal. Because of where the stroke occurred in the brain, she now has Broca's Aphasia, which means that she understands what others are saying and knows what she wants to say but struggles to get the words out. Despite the challenges of Broca's Aphasia, she's determined, spirited, and pushing forward. Yet, the journey ahead demands extensive speech therapy, community support, and healthy lifestyle shifts.
