We are heartbroken to share the tragic loss of Ambaye Fenta, whose life was tragically cut short on February 27, 2025. Ambaye was a devoted father, husband, friend, and researcher–a beloved and integral part of the Simien Mountains Gelada Research Project (SMGRP) for over a decade.

Ambaye grew up in Michibi, a small village in the Simien Mountains, and joined SMGRP as a teenager in 2010, quickly becoming an indispensable part of the team. His kindness, humor, and deep connection to the geladas he studied made him a cherished friend to all—both the human and nonhuman primates. His infectious smile and always-cool demeanor made everyone around him feel at ease and part of the family.

As his family navigates this heartbreaking loss, we are coming together to support them. Any contribution—big or small—will go directly to helping them during this incredibly difficult time.
