My name is Amarilis, and I have always worked hard to support myself and my daughter, who has special needs. For almost three years, I cared for a family’s children, doing my best to be understanding even when my boss was under a lot of stress. Unfortunately, things became unbearable when, on November 3, after returning the stroller for her children, my boss began yelling at me and insulting me in front of her building. I was so shaken and nervous that I couldn’t even speak. The next day, I tried to encourage her to seek help, but she didn’t listen. By Wednesday, I felt I had no choice but to leave my job.

The stress and sadness from losing my job took a toll on my health. A week later, I suffered a mental breakdown and had to be hospitalized for two weeks. I am still recovering, but now I am facing a new challenge: I have no job and no income to pay my rent, bills, food, or my weekly loan payments. I am actively looking for work, but December is a difficult time to find a new job. I am hopeful that by February, I will be able to start working again and get back on my feet.

What makes this even harder is that my daughter, who is 42 years old, depends on me completely. She has had seizures since she was seven months old and needs my care every day. I am extremely worried in this very, very hard moment, not knowing how I will provide for her and myself.
