Dear Friends and Community,
It is with a heavy heart, yet a steadfast spirit of hope, that I share a critical update regarding Amare Malcolm. Just two weeks shy of his highly anticipated senior pictures Amare, a vibrant 17-year-old high school senior, became the victim of a near-fatal hit-and-run accident on October 20, 2025. While leaving his job in Rex, Georgia, this gifted self-taught guitarist, avid video game player, and passionate soccer enthusiast had his life irrevocably altered.
The collision left Amare in a critical condition, sustaining a multitude of severe injuries including a fractured pelvis, bilateral lung collapse, extensive road rash, and a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). The devastating news sent shockwaves through his family, loved ones, and friends, as they grappled with the terrifying reality of his fight for survival.
Amare was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, where for seven grueling hours, medical staff manually administered his breathing until a specialized team from Wellstar could stabilize him on an ECMO machine – a testament to the sheer will to keep him alive. He was then transferred to Wellstar Kennesaw Hospital, spending three harrowing weeks in the ICU. During this critical period, Amare endured multiple complex surgeries, including a craniectomy to manage severe swelling and bleeding in his brain. He was placed in a medically induced coma, reliant on a ventilator, and battled acute kidney failure, necessitating several days of dialysis.
On November 17, 2025, a significant, though challenging, milestone was reached as Amare was released from the ICU. He was transferred to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a renowned acute inpatient rehabilitation facility specializing in traumatic brain injuries. Amare currently remains in a state of Disorder of Consciousness (DOC), a challenging phase as his long and unpredictable path to recovery truly begins.
The journey ahead for Amare is not only arduous but also incredibly demanding, both physically and financially. Recovering from a severe TBI is an extensive and highly unpredictable process that will require substantial, ongoing resources. His care will encompass colossal medical bills, prolonged inpatient and subsequent outpatient rehabilitation, 24-hour in-home care, specialized medical equipment, as well as intensive occupational and speech therapy crucial for him to regain his cognitive abilities. Furthermore, his fractured pelvis necessitates additional surgeries and extensive physical therapy to restore any degree of mobility. Amare is currently wheelchair-bound, and tragically, his family home is not wheelchair accessible, adding an urgent need for critical modifications.
To know Amare is to be touched by his infectious smile and genuinely kind, easy-going nature. He is a devoted son, brother, and grandson, cherishing every moment with his family, including his beloved dogs, Louie and Bella. Amare was on the precipice of adulthood, eagerly embracing new experiences, deeply passionate about his music, and dreaming of one day forming a band with his friends. He was a dedicated student, immensely proud to be graduating, and worked extra shifts at his job, joyfully saving for simple pleasures like the electric scooter that afforded him independence and allowed him to connect with friends.
We are reaching out to our community to humbly ask for your continued support. Every donation, regardless of its size, will make an immeasurable difference in providing Amare with the specialized care, equipment, and rehabilitation he desperately needs on this profoundly challenging road to recovery. Your prayers, thoughts, and extraordinary generosity are a source of immense strength and comfort to our family during this difficult time. We promise to keep you updated on Amare's progress as he bravely navigates each step of this demanding journey.
With deepest gratitude,
